This is an old-ish thread - from a member whose comments are often (like his stamps!) quirky - that had been updated recently. It didn't bother me at the time, I'm all for freedom of speech. And I'm sure (though I didn't look as I wasn't all that interested in the stamps in question) that the stampboards thread eventually settled down to a decent discussion and then probably fizzled out. I actually got kicked off the stampboards forum for absent-mindedly linking to this forum when discussing my own stamps there so I don't go there anymore. But what do other members feel? I'm happy to ask Panterra to recalibrate if people are offended and I'm sure he'd oblige. |

I'm not offended by the comments about the comments received on the other forum, or the comments about the comments about the comments there. This whole thread revels in its ability to outrage (or 'out' rage). it is DESPERATE for a reaction and giving it any kind of renewed credence here only serves to play into the hands of the provocateur and to re-direct members to another forum to understand what the fuss is/was all about. Don't bother. I am surprised anyone took the stamps so seriously on stampboard, they look intentionally amateur and designed to provoke a kneejerk response. The crudeness of the artwork (and I do not mean this in a derogatory way, I am sure it was absolutely intended to look rough) reminds me of 1970's University 'rag mags' artwork. More of an attempt at art than design.

Kemp Land's new commemorative set features beautiful orchids.
The stamp issue was requested by the new gay President of Kemp Land, Aubrey McKinnon. The most colourful and bright orchids that could be found were used for the set. The stamps have been printed by the Occussi-Ambeno Government Printer, KDPN, in small minisheets comprising two sets. Kemp Land 2018 Beautiful Orchids of Planet Earth. The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. The Orchidaceae have about 28,000 currently accepted species, distributed in about 763 genera. The determination of which family is larger is still under debate, because verified data on the members of such enormous families are continually in flux. Regardless, the number of orchid species nearly equals the number of bony fishes and is more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. Phalaenopsis (1825), known as moth orchids, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species. Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids. It is native to southern China, Taiwan, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland. In Kemp Land, it is grown in insulated glasshouses. Dendrobium is a huge genus of orchids. It was established by Olof Swartz in 1799 and today contains about 1,200 species. The genus occurs in diverse habitats throughout much of south, east and southeast Asia, including China, Japan, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Guinea, Vietnam, and many of the islands of the Pacific, as well as Kemp Land. The name is from the Greek dendron ("tree") and bios ("life"); it means "one who lives on trees", or, essentially, "epiphyte". In 1981, Briegar reclassified all terete-leaved Dendrobiums from Australia and New Guinea into a new genus, Dockrillia. The Winika orchid from New Zealand was formerly D. cunninghamii, but has now been moved into a monotypic genus Winika. In 1989, Clements upgraded the D. speciosum complex into individual species; similarly, the D. bigibbum complex (which contains the well-known Cooktown Orchid of Australia, D. phalaenopsis) has recently been split up. However, as an illustration of the current revisions in the taxonomy of Orchidaceae these 'splits' have now been reversed and the currently accepted species, natural nothospecies are presented on Wikispecies Dendrobium. The site includes a list of references that help explain the contemporary taxonomy of Dendrobium Sw., Nova Acta Regiae Soc. Sci. Upsal. 6: 82 (1799), nom. cons. Enjoy the beautiful orchids of planet Earth! - we all need to brighten up our lives and stamp collections. |

Kemp Land 2019 first direct airship flight from Kemp Land to Occussi-Ambeno. Gold overprint on the 90c Orchid stamp. The big event for the small Antarctic country of Kemp Land in 2019 is slated to be the first zeppelin flight to its ally, Occussi-Ambeno. To celebrate the event, the 90c Orchid stamp has been overprinted in gold with the zeppelin emblem of Occussi-Ambeno's airline, Swiftair, and the text "First direct Airship Flight: Kemp Land to Occussi-Ambeno, 2019". The flight is expected to take place within the next two months, weather permitting, so anyone keen to get a carried cover can contact me to arrange something. More info: visit the website for Swiftair[size=75], the zeppelin airline of Occussi-Ambeno, for safe flight in helium airships: http://geocities.ws/swiftair |

Kemp Land 2008 Shackleton Expedition centenary set. To celebrate the centenary of the British Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton 1907 to 1909, the small Antarctic country Kemp Land issued a set of four stamps in 2008. The designs: 5 cents ... Adelie penguins. 30 cents ... Shackleton's expedition ship, the "Nimrod", departing from Lyttelton for Antarctica, 1907. 75 cents ... The Beardmore Glacier, first discovered by Shackleton. $3 ... Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874 - 1922). === This set was a joint issue with Mevu, which issued similar stamps. Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874 – 1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer who was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Expedition, 1901–04, from which he was sent home early on health grounds. Determined to make amends for this perceived personal failure, he returned to Antarctica in 1907 as leader of the Nimrod Expedition. In January 1909 he and three companions made a southern march which established a record Farthest South latitude 190 km from the South Pole, by far the closest convergence in exploration history up to that time. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home. After the race to the South Pole ended in 1912 with Roald Amundsen's conquest, Shackleton turned his attention to what he said was the one remaining great object of Antarctic journeying -– the crossing of the continent from sea to sea, via the pole. In case you are wondering if wartime conditions make the "censorship" necessary, PEACE has broken out in the Gay Republic of Kemp Land, but mail censorship (established under the old Stalinist regime) has not yet been abolished. Probably because so much mail-porn is sent in handwritten letters, and the censors really enjoy reading it all (after all, how many jobs are you actually paid to read porn?) |
