The Hamburg Gas Works was an energy company founded in 1844, remaining as an independent company until 2003 when it was taken over by E.ON.
These stamps were issued in 1973 for publicity purposes and feature the coat of arms of the city as used on early Hamburg postage stamps. They were issued in various colours including blue, brown and purple. Another, more colourful, sheet was also produced in that year with the slogan 'Clean Energies Clean World'. There are indications that the stamps shown here may have been used as private post stamps by Hamburger Gaswerke.
