The Tati Company Ltd has its origins in 1870 when King Lobengula of the Northern Ndebele (Matabele) granted a mining concession to Sir John Swinburne. Gold had been found in the Tati district in 1864. The region was administered by the British Commissioner of the Bechuanaland Protectorate and later annexed to Bechuanaland which later became Botswana. In 1970, surprisingly, the concession was renewed to Tati Concessions and the company still exists to this day. This concession remains a major controversy in Botswana.
Here is a Tati Company Ltd cheque from 1960 depicting an elephant, an animal associated with Lobengula. It bears a postage and revenue Bechuanaland Protectorate stamp. A set of six revenue stamps, also depicting an elephant, was issued by Tati Concessions in 1896 produced by De La Rue. It is suggested that some stamps were used for postage. A full set can sell for £600 today. |
