I hit lucky on a Google search regarding the Church of Scotland sheets of 30 stamps above. They are the work of a Banknote , Security and General Purpose Engraver called Gilbert Oliver of Glasgow. He produced a number of sets, many of which appeared on different coloured papers, in sets of 5 to 30 per set, from 1890 till 1906.

Daniel's sheet is from 1905 and mine is from 1906.

Just received my first overseas copy of one of these, though it is still Anglican and published in the UK. The sunday school attended is Bombay Catheredral and the date is 1918. The cover is rigid card with a textured finish and in addition to the picture there is an embossed gold design

Very posh!

Sadly the owner only turned up for 7 lessons

I recently got 5 from the 1960s, and these are much more cheaply produced. My little collection though, now stretches to 30 albums etc.

I am starting to get these better organised now, sorted by publishers.

This batch were publisher by The Faith Press. Originally printed in London in 1907, the press was soon transferred to a cowshed behind an inn (sound familiar?) in Leighton Buzzard, before moving to move suitable premises.

This one dates probably to 1925-26 based on the style and date given for Easter. They all start with the beginning of the church year with the first sunday of Advent.

Hardback with fabric finish, and stapled pages

The stamps are coloured according to the period within the church year, with special days like Christmas having gold stamps.

This is from 1929-30

The following all date from the 1950s and are in chronological order.

and the stamps

You can see both a progression in the stamp design towards a more simplistic style, and that having been in the possession (and pockets) of a child the condition varies in terms of wear and how carefully the stamps are stuck in! Surprisingly most do seem to have a full or near full set of stamps.

These next three are currently the oldest in the collection, run in consecutive years, and were collected by sisters - the elder one being 16 at the time! They were published by The Church of England Sunday School Institute. In order they date from 1917, 1918 and 1919. Oddly, the earlist, issued during World War I, is the fanciest, with a textured card cover and gold ornamentation.

and the stamps, which are similar through all three albums, but lose the coloured border in 1919. No great loss, as you can probably see it seems to have been done as a second run through the printing machine and on some stamps is way off.

By 1926 the album design had changed again, and by then was a more flimsy card cover. You couldn't bend the pre-1920 ones easily. Overall the format is more austere, and it looks like their heart had gone out of producing them.

These were issued by Church Assembly Children’s Council. They are from 1960-62 in consecutive years. You can see that these are designed to appeal to children of that period, as opposed to those from 40-50 years earlier which were a lot more 'churchy' and the stamps centering on the gospels and Old Testament.

Another publisher was Home Words who were in action from the 1920s to the 1950s and possibly beyond. I do like the period feel of these.

The first three all date from the 1930s and were collected by the same girl who lived near Newark in Nottinghamshire.

The pages and stamps are much the same each year, but there are a few special stamps, twice the size of normal, each year

Not sure of the date on this first one. Its a bit on the scruffy side. The other is from 1957 I think. After that there were more that I have seen, but they are not in my collection ..... yet!

The Shaw Picture Company specialises in religious art and issued its own sunday school stamps and albums in the 1950s and early sixties. These are from, in order, 1955-58. The same album cover was used in 1956 and 57. And a rather creased example, possibly from 1961 or 1962.

Thanks for posting these up Bas. Terrific stuff

If anybody else has any information, links, images or anything on these please post it up here or pm me. I am trying to collect all this to find out the scope of these albums. I have at least 3 more heading my way at the moment. And in addition to the Bombay Cathedral album I have found they were in use in Australia and New Zealand too. So I would expect Canadian version exist as well. European examples would be most welcome.
