I will be there, and I am thinking of bringing along my Discworld sports and limited edition spare stockbook for some trades or swaps. Anyone interested?

Any feedback from other forums, Steve?

I would love to meet new Discworld stamps collectors if they are out there, it would be great to establish a regular meetup for keen DW stamp collectors now that the Wincanton events no longer happen.

Of course will also be wonderful to meet ANY cindy collectors too!!!  We usually congregate upstairs in the coffee bar after mooching round the displays - just look out for the happy, smiling people - come over and say hello!  :-)

Was it worth going?

I am only interested in Discworld so is it worth me going only for that?  When is next year's event?

I had hoped to get aalong to the 2020 Stampex Spring show but thought no-one had mentioned it on here, but have now found this, which kind of explains why no-one has brought it up earlier -

The Spring Stampex International 2020 show will be cancelled, due to the international exhibition London 2020 scheduled to be held in May. We are fully supporting London 2020 and in doing so didn't want Stampex in February to have an impact on footfall for the international showcase.

So who is going to the event in May then?

LONDON 2020
There will be a major stamp exhibition at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London from Saturday 2 May 2020 until Saturday 9 May 2020. This will be an International, granted FIP Patronage, with competitive classes in Championship, Traditional, Postal History, Thematic, Revenue, Postal Stationery, Aerophilately, Open, Picture Postcards, One Frame, Modern, Literature and Youth.

There are two Saturdays so even more accessible!

I'm sure I'll be going to Stampex London 2020 but from the programme of events, it looks dull, dull, dull. I see nothing to distinguish it from Stampex and there is a distinct lack of ambition. There are no external events (which, at least, was a saving grace of London 2010) apart from a bunch of dinners. It's a shame they didn't learn from the much better Europhilex 2015 also held at the BDC.

I presume you are talking about the 2nd-9th May exhibition. I should be avaialble for either Saturday, but which one are we thinking of.

I'd like to join the crowd this year having missed some recent get-togethers but I would only be able to do the second Saturday as we will be in Newcastle the previous weekend for a concert in which my son Robbie is playing first clarinet in the University Symphony Orchestra on the Saturday evening.

If we are lucky and all things do go to plan there might be an Autum Stampex but i'm not holding my breath.

If not it will be another Virtual Stampex.

We will still be in lockdown this time next year. So pointless look ahead, planning anything or getting excited.

Oh please don't I have to have some hope

Oh well perhaps I will get my Discworld stamp collection organised. The made me an acting manager for a brief 4 weeks before Christmas and the extra money will buy a few more Lighthouse folio sheets.

Mind you I have to fit that in around the two other new hobbies I now have, bookbinding and box making. I haven't go very far with either but they felt like a good idea at the time.

Perhaps by the time we get another Stampex I'll have a few more hobbies LOL

I would love to attend another Stampex - if for no other reason than to raise a glass to Larry Hart - but like Steve I believe September might be too soon.

No reason why we shouldn't plan ahead for 2023 or even 2024 when it will be the anniversary of a very special event  :-)

I'd missed this very sad news as I don't frequent the Discworld stamps forum much these days and I see now that it was announced on there just a week ago.

I'll fold some paper (just fold in half, no pretensions at origami) and raise a glass in memory of a great character this evening.

No I hadn’t

However I have now !

https://www.brignellbookbinders.com/" rel="nofollow - https://www.brignellbookbinders.com/

The book I had a hand in, about Med pottery in Cambridgeshire was only issued as a soft back and the pages of my copy came lose quickly and I’ve always wanted it bound as a hardback. This might be the place to go

I’m not quite at making real books point, I made a miniature book that you can use as a decoration, but it was fun.

Best thing I did when lockdown eased slightly was made a box that works like a Jacobs ladder.

Date Posted: 31 January 2021 at 22:54
Barry is a wonder and in normal times runs tutorials at his workshop, well worth investing in.

Your Jacobs ladder box sounds intriguing!

Is that Medieval pottery or Mediterranean pottery?

There is also a bookbinder at the Printing Museum in Norwich who would be able to fix your book, once the world gets back to normal  :-)

Back in 2004 I was part of the Discworld stamps presence when, as a result of using their perforator for the Going Postal book publicity photography, we were asked if we'd like to share the stand for the Bath Postal Museum at that year's Stampex.

The Merchants stamps had just been introduced and Alan and I took along a 'pull-up' display board to help attract attention. We made a lot of friends that year among printers and stamp magazines. Our stamps were very well received and resulted in features in Gibbons magazine and a good buzz generally among collectors - the area in front of our stand was probably the busiest that year - there was a real sense that something special was going on.

Since then several of the members here have met up at the February event (on the Saturday) over the past years for a chat and a coffee and then on to a pub or restaurant when the event closes.

In the early days we used to comment on how we were among the youngest (and noisiest!) group in the coffee bar - but not so much now  :-)

There are always displays at the event - frequently these will include cinderella material - and there are plenty of retailers there who sell to the public - it's not all about the trade. It is fun though to chat to the traders about how popular and sought after some of the cinderellas we collect have become...

The Royal Mail usually have a presence there, with often a newly-launched issue being available, and they also have a facility where you can post an item in a special postbox and have it franked with their Stampex commemorative cancellation.  I am not sure whether the Royal Mail are going to be there at the autumn event this year, when I spoke to them last time there was another show that they were going to focus on instead - but then everything has changed since.

There is usually information online - Gooogle for Stampex - which will give you more detail.

I should be going to the February event, assuming it goes ahead.  Every year I try to twist Alan's arm to come along too but it either coincides with his birthday weekend or the rugby...

It's FREE on Saturday - but - I have seen online that you need to pre-book a ticket as visitor numbers are being limited.

Have fun!

Not for me as I won't wear a mask for the journey down on public transport. It is now 18 months since I caught a train or bus, somthing we would have done twice a week previously. When they remove that restriction I will be hopping straight back on

Most train companies and public transport do not insist on masks being worn if you do not want to.

The government have left it to individual transport companies to decide whether they insist on mask wearing and so no-one seems to know whether they should wear a mask or not.

I have travelled a fair bit on coach, tube and train recently and generally there are very few people wearing masks.

A little later in the day I know however its Autumn Stampex this weekend and I will be in London so I might stick my head in for old times sake.

I can find details of the Autumn Stampex 2023 but nothing for a spring one next year so maybe the spring one has gone??

Maybe we can get together for Autumn 2023 (29 Sep-2 Oct 2023) if it doesnt clash with anything

Did you go in the end Carole?  I must admit I had completely forgotten about it.  Any gems?

A meet-up sounds like a great idea at any time of year - are there any other shows we could all get to during the year? Doesn't have to be London though obviously that has its advantages.
