I have a stamp which I have tried to upload but it has been refused as it may cause "malicious content"! No idea why, but I will do my best to describe it. It's rouletted rather than perforated. The centre of the design is a penny black, with the dates 1840 and 1990 on either side, so obviously commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1st postage stamp. The word "Sonne" is above the picture, and "Empire" below it, with the "value" of 15 in each of the bottom two corners. The whole thing is printed on orange paper and not very professionally produced.
Can anyone help me identify this stamp? I've googled "Sonne Empire stamp" but even that has met with very little success, although it may be emanating from Australia. (Admin) With apologies to Peter for the delay in posting the picture: ![]() |

Some Sonne stamps, including Agatha Christie, Emperor's Birthday, Mevu's 20th anniversary of independence, and definitives.
The Penny Black Sesquicentennial stamp you show above was issued by the Sonne Empire, an amorphous land in the north Atlantic, created by a young lad living in Brisbane, Australia, in the late 1980s, Timothy Bolotnikoff.
He and I became correspondents, and intrigued with our various lands, exchanging lots of mail between Sonne, Occussi-Ambeno, and Sedang. He also worked on resurrecting the Monte Bello Islands as a stamp-issuer, and I collaborated with him on that by printing the new Monte Bello stamps and making him a datestamp.
Emperor Tim printed his stamps via photocopy machine, often on coloured paper, and perforated them with his mother's sewing machine. Eventually, I offered to do a few issues for him via letterpress, and the Mevu 20th birthday stamp shown here is one of my productions.
Tim was a bellicose fellow, responsible for several wars in the normally peaceful Fifth World. Eventually, he invaded the Occussian colony of West Vinland, located on an island quite near Sonne, territory that he had earlier given to the Sultan.
Finally, he got his law degree and gave up Cinderella philately (much to the relief of the whole Fifth World!) and went off and got a job with the Australian diplomatic service. He is now an official in the Australian high commission in Bangladesh.
And West Vinland? Freed from the evil Sonnian occupying army, it declared independence as the Free Vinland Republic, and continues to issue attractive and interesting stamps to this day.

I have swags of paperwork and correspondence to/from Sonne during the time of its purported existence, but still have a bad taste in my mouth whenever I think of it. So not a land I am enthusiastic about. But if you have any specific questions, just ask. |

![]() West Vinland 1990 one of the first set of overprints on Occussi-Ambeno stamps, to inaugurate the postal service of the new colony, which had been generously given to Occussi-Ambeno by the Sonne Empire.

![]() Sonne 1990 first zeppelin flight from Sonne to Occussi-Ambeno, on cover. Sonne flourished briefly in the 1980s and early 90s. Back pre-earthquake, in happier times, the two countries were quite close. The overprint is metallic purple, which reflects the light wonderfully when you move it, almost giving a "rainbow" effect. |
