The stamp Act of 1782 and then 1783 introduced a tax on promissory notes, including cheques and receipts on an ad valorem (by value) basis. Further Acts followed but in 1853 the tax on promissory notes was standardised and there was a single rate of 1d per item which increased to 2d in 1919.
Here are two receipts from Waterlow and Sons (stationers and stamp printers) from 1919 and 1930 showing a one penny tax and a two pence tax. They both relate to the same firm of solicitors. |
