Talyllyn Railway

This narrow gauge railway opened in 1865 to transport slate the 7½ miles from Nant Gwernol to Towyn on the West Wales coast, where it could be loaded onto Cambrian Railway trucks. It was due to close in 1951, but was rescued by volunteers and is the first such heritage railway to reopen.

Though a railway post operated beforehand, the first actual stamps for the revitalised railway were issued in 1965. Here are some of the earliest stamps. The cover is somewhat personal to me. There was a stamp shop in Needless Alley on Birmingham, where I used to drop in whenever I was 'up town'. I saw this cobver in the window one day and just had to have it. It was one of the two items I bought there that set me up on the upward spiral of Cinderella collecting.
