One of the curses of the modern era is the proliferation of sandflies, also known as midges.  

To call attention to the campaign to exterminate this evil vampire, Kemp Land released a set of three commemorative stamps.



Kemp Land 2000 Anti-Sandfly Campaign,
plus the 45c overprinted later that year to celebrate the CHADPEX stamp exhibition.

Each stamp shows a closeup view of the tiny vampire insect that is responsible for so much misery throughout the world. Besides spreading disease, sandflies are also guilty of another crime. They make pleasant places unwelcoming for humans. A classic case is the small coastal town of Jamestown, on Martins Bay, in what is now New Zealand's Fiordland National Park. In 1872, the perfect location was chosen for the town and port. It was surveyed and prepared for settlement. Land was sold. The settlers arrived, but found it to be so completely infested with the vile insect that they were driven to distraction every minute outdoors. The town was abandoned and never re-settled. Only a map reference marks its location. Today, Fiordland remains heavily infested with sandflies.

Surely, nothing like the modern era curse of a lengthy website address, particularly when shoehorned into onto a fantasy stamp?

Kemp Land issued this attractive set on 22nd April 2024 to celebrate the centenary of the death of the first chairman of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin.

  • The 75c shows Lenin speaking on a rostrum, accompanied by Samuel Tibor from the Hungarian Soviet Republic.
  • The $1.35 shows Lenin seated with his pet cat, Boris.
  • The 45c shows Lenin seated with his close comrade-in-arms, Joseph Stalin.

Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (1870 – 1924), better known as Vladimir Lenin, was a Russian revolutionary, politician, & political theorist. He served as the first head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia, & later the Soviet Union, became a one-party socialist state governed by the Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, his developments to the ideology are called Leninism. He was not a philatelist, and was only shown on Soviet stamps after his death.

  • Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, & others, although by 1918 it had centralised power in the new Communist Party. His administration redistributed land among the peasantry & nationalised banks & large-scale industry. It withdrew from the First World War by signing a treaty conceding territory to the Central Powers, & promoted world revolution through the Communist International. His administration defeated right & left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922. Responding to wartime devastation, famine, & popular uprisings, in 1921 Lenin encouraged economic growth through the New Economic Policy. Several nations were re-united into the new Soviet Union in 1922. He died in Gorki, with Joseph Stalin succeeding him as the pre-eminent figure in the Soviet government.

  • Widely considered one of the most significant & influential figures of the 20th century, Lenin is viewed by his supporters as a champion of socialism, communism, anti-imperialism and the working class.
