I bought http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0036.jpg - these 2 strips of Wonderland 1843 stamps on eBay.

Adding them to my collection made me realise that there are at least two types of the 1 penny 1843 "White Lines Added" issue.

Illustrated in the catalogue is a penny deep brown which has no hearts in the bottom corner of the design.  But the penny yellow-brown (not illustrated) does have "hearts in solid colour and outlined in white".

The two I bought on eBay are different in that the one on the left is Orange Brown and the one on the right is printed on blue paper.  They both have hearts in the bottom corners.

So has anyone else spotted any other versions of type 3?

While I'm asking questions has anyone seen any of these stamps se tenant with a border design or text with the border on the right of the stamps?  I've seen lots of these stamps on eBay and I have several in my collection but the border always seems to be on the left.  Does anyone have an image of a sheet they could share?

Keith

They do not exist in sheet form; they were printed in pairs only, with the "tab" at left. The 1d red  and brown, with lines, follow the same format as the 1840 blacks in this manner. There were some printed on blued paper, probably about 10% of the total.
The first printings of these back in1979 (?)  were on "ButterflY" brand gummed paper. The  recently printed stamps are hand gummed, as they are laser-printed as against litho, and gummed paper spells death and destruction to most laser-copiers.  The "tab" has no significance, being merely ornamental.

Yes
There are two A5 size "catalogues", one for the "Pre-Alice period of 1840-1865, and one for the issues of 1865-1871 which encompasses both Wonderland and Looking-glass Land.  All stamps are illustrated with details of dates, times, etc.  Postal history not covered in either.
Available at £4 each  post paid. email mailto:kingphantas@aol.com - kingphantas@aol.com

That's a super sheet.  I envy you having it.

Here are my latest aquisitions - a number of covers which will be familiar to those of you with the Through the Post Box book.

Here is a http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0040.jpg - William Unready envelope addressed to Alice.

Then a http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0042.jpg - cover from Alice to her right foot .  Posted from the Pool of Tears with an Elbow Bend transit mark.

A cover from http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0044.jpg - Alice to her cat Dinah .  Recovered from the Pool of Tears.  I love the Emergency Inflation issue stamp.  http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0045.jpg - Here is the back with the Dodo Dead Letter Office stamp.

A http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0046.jpg - Bill, the First Lizard in Space crash cover .  I really loved the "Recovered from the Cucumber Frame" cancellation.

A http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0048.jpg - Royal Household Official stamp on an invitation to play croquet with the Queen.

An http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/WIPA%201933/Machins/Cinderellas/scan0047.jpg - Umteenth Centenary of Mad Tea-Party stamp used on cover.

Now to get them into my collection!

I particularly like the Letter to Diah, but looking at the catalogue I wonder if the value of this srticle has been artificially enhanced. Individually the stamps are values at 1.0 to 10.0 but an unseparated strip is only valued 0.3

Finally and at last I have a set of the Wonderland stamps. The 1840-1865 issues complete. And these are a very special set as they were posted to me on the anniversary of Alice's boat trip and the telling of the Wonderland story.
I shall of course be wanting of the later issues and the Snark Island set, plus some covers to complete the collection.

I think I shall make some special album pages incorporating the catalogue format together with some classic Wonderland images.

Thank you Gerald

I've discovered a stamp dealer on The Strand (a rare thing these days and not stanley Gibbons, at one time there were many dealers located there) who actually had a few cinderellas and in particular some of Gerald King's stamps. Some of my finds are shown here along with stamps with tags that I had previously purchased:

Daniel, I think you said a while back that you were a fan of the Penny black and stamps derived from it.

But here's one item I forgot that I had. Cut from a parcel wrapping almost certainly sent to Mr Dodgson whilst studying at Oxford. I wonder what was inside the parcel. Possibly a cake from a favourite Aunt?

I've finally managed to start to add Gerald King's (aka Phantasmagoria) works to askmeaboutstamps.com.  I've started with the Alice series of covers and am in the process of ploughing my way through the pre-Alice Dodgson covers.  You can find them http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/?page_id=1350 - here and watch them slowly grow.

When I get there I'll need a scan of your parcel fragment Steve.  I have one but with 4 different stamps.

I have the feeling that this might turn into a never-ending task!

Keith

Only another zillion covers to go and then I can start on Snark!

I think like me, Gerald does a lot of his stamps for the fun of it, if others enjoy it too then that's an added bonus.

Keith - I know what a monumental task this is for you but I am sure you will get your reward in stampy heaven one day.  I know lots of collectors, including me, are going to find this archive hugely helpful and a source of great inspiration.  I hope it also helps ensure that Gerald gets the recognition he truly deserves.

Anyway, I can't do anymore today as I have to go to the pub and then to see Chesterfield display their silky skills battling against the evil Shrewsbury.  And before I do any of that I have to go find a spam fritter.

Here are 4 sets of Wonderland Revenues that you'll not find in Gerald's catalogue.  There are only 12 sets of each so will not appear on the open market often I suspect.

The 4 sets are

1860 QV head and VR script underprint
1861 as above but overprinted with new currency
1862 re-issue of 1860 with new currency
1865 re-issue of 1862 with Alice head and AL script underprint.

I keep meaning to look into these from time to time but it keeps getting put on the back burner due to lack of time. But, every now and again, I do a bit of digging into them and I was very sorry to discover I had missed what looks to have been a fascinating (or "intriguing" as it was described in the sale listing) lot in a recent philatelic auction in Geneva for which there was online bidding.

David Feldman Spring Auction Series, Geneva - May 19-21, 2011

http://www.davidfeldman.com/buying/auctions/previous-auctions/spring-auction-series-gva-2011/browse-lots/aucP/auction-series-gva-may-2011/item/118246/ - Lot 31089
1970-80, Collection of Gerald M. King fantasy stamps, with Wonderland, Snark Island and Elizatoria, incl. mint stamps and 149 covers, as well as the book by him and two "catalogues," a most intriguing lot (Est. € 100/200)

Estimate: 100 EUR
Price realised: 150 EUR on Sat 21st May 2011 10:00:00 (GMT+2)

Looks like quite a bargain - I don't suppose it went to anyone on here, did it?

Having just this week completed my collection of all Gerald's covers I can say, sob, that it wasn't me, sob.

149 covers for that price is a fantastic bargain.  That's i Euro each and the stamps for free! Sob, whimper.

But I do have a complete collection of his USA forgeries that nearly got him kicked off eBay and assaulted by a bunch of Navy Seals and that's more than most folk can say.

Now to get on with the Snark and Lundy issues.  That may be more than one lifetime can handle as there are so many.  But I'll do my best.  Wish me luck.

I got my copy of Alice Through the Pillar Box and What She Found There today and what an excellent publication. Not a big book by any means but full of Gerald's humour and illustrations in full colour of stamps and covers. And at £5 for a hardback, if anyone is still in need of a last minute Xmas present for themselves you cannot go wrong.

Funnily enough Amazon UK had one copy in stock .... at £88!!! but it loks like a first ed from '78

Here's somthing that has lurked in my collection for years.

Being Wonderland and is vlaued 1 Golden Wink, it must be one of Gerald's. Perhaps an early trial. He has said a couple of years ago that he doesn't recall it.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland and the 50th Anniversary of Gerald King's Wonderland stamps.

Gerry is designing a cover and miniature sheet to mark the event and an insert to describe the background.  There will be a strictly limited 50 numbered copies costing £25 each. They will be available only via the eBay dealer Anne2268 using buy it now.  Anne is now dealing with all Gerry's sales in order to free up his time for design.  This augers well for more stamps and covers.

Anyway, here are some images of the cover image and flap, the miniature sheet and the "postmark".  No guarantees that the final issue will not have differences!!

Here are some Wonderland stamps that don't appear in Gerry's own listings

they lok like early prototypes to me, attempting to replica the GB originals. Unfortunately they are actually stuck to the page, but if one only pay pennies one cannot complain to much.

I might bring you some unstuck ones to Stampex if you are good - and if I remember.

You always need to treat Gerry's Wonderland catalogue as a "simplified" as there are so many printings over the years (and several plates) that varieties happened quite a lot and shades (and sometimes colours) changed over time. The catalogue is a snapshot in time.  Basically you have Wonderland 1840 - 186 Catalogue types 1 to 5 with some playing with the colours (of the stamps and the paper) and the values here and there.

I have them in black, blue, red, orange.  Sometimes perforated, mainly not.  I have some with overprints of "Revenue" and "Looking Glass Land" but these (like all uncatalogued Gerry King overprints) are of dubious provenance although interesting to see the master forger forged.  They are nice to see in sheets with the se-tenant labels all shown in position.

They are not replicas of the GB originals.  The Wonderland stamps were issued on 5 May 1840.  The GB stamps were issued a day later and are, therefore, the copies.  The same copying was done with the Mulready envelopes too.

I thnk someone in Wonderland had inside information and beat them to the post (pun intended).

Taking into consideration that the Wonderland stamps have been around for 50 years, I would not be at all surprised if these were some of the originals. The others in my collection have the appearance of being from the last few years.

I need to take a closer look at the differences. Gerry has stated earlier in this thread that he moved from litho to laser printing, so that alone may help date them.
But also they have been redrawn. Most of those stuck-down stamps lack the hearts (of any variety) in the bottom corners that are on my more recent stamps. The lettering has also been re-done in bolder typeface.

Keith: are you up to cataloguing all this for posterity?

I doubt it.  Although a start might be made should I ever get round to sorting and scanning the Wonderland stamps (pre and post-Alice).

In the pre-Alice range there are at least 4 phases of the stamps and, to give an example, the first release of Alice stamps, in 1965, included only 36 stamps, each printed in black on 4 different coloured papers.  None of these black printings appear in the catalogue of June 2000.  So maybe the 1840 issues are simple in comparison!!  I'll see if I can dig out stuff from Gerry telling me what he did and when.

Your wallets will be pleased to know that there is a new Gerry King Wonderland issue.  It commemorates the 150th Wonderland Philatelic Congress on 4 July.  There are two sheets, two proof sheets and two envelopes with inserts.

I've added details to the askme website http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/?page_id=4378" rel="nofollow - and they can be seen here .  Get robbing the piggy banks.

In response to Steve's request I have finally started to try to get my mind around this and thought I'd involve everyone so as to get input from your collections.  A box of old stuff I bought last year contained all the original Wonderland printings (including a proof sheet of the first issue on light blue paper signed twice by Gerry!!).

So I thought I'd start on the Victoria issues.  I have only seen these in sheets of 16 + 6 labels (and part-sheets of course).  They seem to exist imperf and perf and in at least three types.  There are at least five colours; black, blue, yellow-brown, dark brown and bright green.  They differ several aspects.

1.  The labels (at least two different types)
2.  The values
3.  The number of uncoloured corner hearts.

Gerry thinks they are colour trials but I think this is how he produced them and I'm trying to prod his memory.  I'm hunting to prove that Types 1 through 5 all exist on these sheets, but it might take time as the print quality isn't always what we would want it to be!

In my simple mind I am classifying the sheets by the number of uncoloured hearts and have spotted three types of sheets so far with 0, 1 and two

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/Gerry%20King%20Victorias/one%20and%20two%20penny%20blue_zpsc0g0ucwb.jpg" rel="nofollow - Here is an example of zero hearts.

Anyone have anything that adds anything to these three basic sheet types?  I'll keep hunting though mine but I have an awful lot of part sheets and I think we need entire ones to see the full picture.

I suspect you'll already know but there is a new Gerry King Wonderpex 1871 miniature sheet from Looking Glass Land.  I've added it to the Askme website and http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/?page_id=1582" rel="nofollow - you can view it here .  I'm sure you'll agree that the new images fit in very neatly.

The first page looks very similar to a page of Wonderland stamps I posted on Photobucket in 2012. I acquired these from artistamp creator and distributor Bruce Grenville in NZ.  Grenville's  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artistamp" rel="nofollow - artistamp  output encompasses an entire alternative universe of artistamp countries. Whereas I can understand Gerald selling his stamps at market value it does mean, however, that it is now impossible for anyone to get a complete collection or anywhere near it.

Thats because they are yours Mick. On the previous page you supplied a link, but its much better for readers to see these on the Forum page.

Now I am a bit confused about Occussi-Ambeno. There is a 12 page article on the stamps of Bruce Henderson in the last Cinderella Philatelist, much of which are the Occussi-Ambeno productions. This article does not mention any of the others of Grenville's states, but does refer to the Timaru Bicycle Post (of which I have some examples), Waikua Is, Queen Maud Land, and Mevu.

Jesper asked on the Miscellanous Gerald King thread for images of the various printings of Wonderland stamps.  I thought I'd move the discussion here to avoid getting the two threads mixed up.

I've added two images below that are from a proof sheet of the first printing.  I hope you can make sense of them.  I had to make it two images as the sheet is wider than my scanner!

The best way of all of telling is the imprint of the Red Lodge Press down the right of the sheet.  Only the first printing was done by them.  Of course that only works with the three adjoining stamps and then only if you have part of the margin.

There was also a poor attempt at perforating the first issue.  I have some of those and will scan tham when I get chance.

I have been fortunate to get ownership of a full set of Wonderland stamps, both the 1940 and 1865 series. These look to be much older than the recent set I have. I won't list all the differences, but suffice to say many of quite different colours and different sizes to the recent printings. I see in the Reference Materials thread a 1st to 4th print listed. Could these be a 4th printing, when do they date from, and does anyone know what print number Gerry is up to now?

I will put them up here as three posts.

Steve, very nice set of Wonderland stamps with detailed descriptions next to the stamps... thanks for posting...

The stamps are all 4th Printing... printed in colours on various coloured papers... and smaller formats than the previous printings… Please see more below…

I have tried to update the information for the different printings (Wonderland 1865 and Looking-Glass Land 1871)... including input from Keith in previous messages…:

1st Printing (1965):

34 stamps (36 stamps, if the variants of the “National Wildlife Week” and the “Freedom from Hunger” stamps counts), Large format, Printed in black only on various coloured papers, Perforated 11 3/4" (poor attempt at perforating the first issue) and Imperforated.

Printed by: Red Lodge Press (Only the first printing was done by them).

Some of the printed sheets from Red Lodge Press were sent to Harry Rooke (Cinderella journalist for the magazine "Stamp Collecting Weekly") who in turn sent them to someone who had a perforating machine.  They came back with at least two thirds badly perforated right into the design. Gerald never used this person again as he by this time had been contacted by Dave Stirling who had his own machine and was much better at it.

2nd Printing (Last half of 1970’s):

Large format, black ink on 10 different coloured papers, Box-rouletted 13 1/2”.

Printed by: TBD

New stamps: The “Too Late”-stamp (7 1/2 Winks), the “Mourning”-stamp (2 Golden Slumbers), the “Postage Due”-stamp (4 Winks), the “Alice’s Coronation”-stamp (20 Winks), a strongly retouched “2nd Botanical Congress” (2 Golden Slumbers), the “Health”-stamp (4 Winks and 2 Winks), the “Political Prisoner’s Relief Fund” (Half Wink) has been “relieved” of another ¼ Wink.
For the “Freedom from Hunger” (leg of mutton) issue the well-known major plate flaw (Cracked Plate) in pair with normal, the flaw now appears on the left-hand copy of the stamps.
Furthermore, the 1 Wink and the 3 Winks Alice heads were printed in blocks of 4.

3rd Printing (Late 1970’s):

To provide additional definitives for use on covers, a special plate was laid down providing blocks of nine of the 1 Wink and the 3 Winks values, with designer’s imprint in the lower left corner “Dodo, Lory & Co.”.
Frame breaks permit plating of all nine positions of the 1 Wink, but in any case each stamp, as the 3 Winks, bears code letters: AA- AB – AC / BA – BB – BC / CA – CB – CC etc.
Furthermore, the third stamp (code letters AC) of the 3 Winks is inverted.

The printing was carried out by “Storyville Publications & Co.” of Walthamstow, with black ink on matt surface-coloured paper, imperforate, in 10 colours (white, pale blue, yellow, pale orange, dark orange, pale green, dark green, pink, red and mauve).

The layout of the third printing part sheet:
The denomination was cleared from the 1 Wink design, and new values created. These were laid down in two rows of five stamps, denominations being 1/2, 1/2, 2, 2, 4, 5 (all in Winks) in the top row, and below 1/2, 1/2, 8, 10, 20 (all in Winks) and the “Political Prisoner’s Relief Fund” (Half Wink). Two different types of the 1/2 Winks denominations (diagonal fraction bar versus horizontal fraction bar).
Above the two rows, the two blocks of nine and between the blocks a new high-value definitive of 1 Golden Slumber, and flanking the se-tenant block another new design, a super-sized 30 Winks Jabberwocky Centennial value.

The book “Alice Through The Pillar-box” (from 1979) mainly shows 1st Printing stamps and 2nd Printing stamps, and the last couple of pages of the book also gives examples of the 3rd Printing stamps.

4th Printing (1982):

Smaller format (compared to the previous printings), Coloured stamps on coloured and white papers, Perforated 11 3/4" and Imperforated.

Six different authentic ink colours of the Victorian period: deep shades of blue, green and carmine, reddish-brown and claret as well as black.
Four different paper colours: white, buff, pale blue and rose.
24 varieties of each stamp.

Printed by: The Phantasmagoria Security Printing Co.

Catalogue covering the 4th Printing stamps: "Curiouser and Curiouser" (January 1982)

5th Printing (2000):

Smaller format (compared to the previous printings), Multi Coloured stamps on white papers, Perforated 11 3/4".

Printed by: The Phantasmagoria Security Printing Co.

Catalogue covering the 5th Printing stamps: "The Millennium Collection" (June 2000)

Thanks for the clarification Jesper. Especially for matching printings against the publications. What does concern me is that with 24 varieties for each stam of the 4th printing how many complete collections are required for completeness of just this one printing!

I wasn't happy with these on the album page as there were. As they were stuck to the page by the stamps' own adhesive I felt there was no alternative but to soak them off and feel quite vindicated now. Half of them had been stuck down over others which actually made up the rest of the issue. There were 1d blues, and 2d blacks, plus more farthing, halfpenny and five farthing stamps.

Why any collector would stick stamps on top of others is quite beyond me!

Mr K isn't the only Cinderella stamp producer with Alice issues, by any means.

The Frodsham and Halton Post did a set in 1988. It marls the centenary of the stage play of the book. This is a cover and insert. Lying near Frodsham and Halton in Cheshire is the village of Daresbury where Charles Dodgson's father was the local vicar. The church has small museum attached which concentrates more on the author's hobby of photography than the alice books. The rectory where he grew up is no more, but the more avid fans can visit its plan marked out in a nearby field.

I have posted here before concerning the red stamp illustrated below, but now have two more from the series.
That red stamp has been in my collection for domkey's years. I had it it before I became aware of Gerald King's Wonderland stamps. On;y then could I place it somewhere. I did contact Gerry about it, but he had no recollections about it, though he did say that he experimented a bit in the earliest days of Wonderland stamp. However they must be his creations. These have denominations in Winks and Golden Slumbers, the currency that Gerry's Wonderland stamps changed to in 1865. Could two stamp producers have come up with the same obscure currency? The only other remote possibility is that someone else did produce these, some came by Gerry, and he subconsciously absorbed Winks and Golden Slumbers, and use them later.
On the whole I think these must be Gerald King's first Wonderland stamps.
