Hey ho all!

I've been working away at this for quite some time and so am pleased to present the beta version of the Discworld Stamp Yearbook for 2006.  This is a beta version- 99% of text is done and in general individual page formatting is done, just need to get the final layout sorted.  So anyone interested is more than welcome to download and look through but don't print it out! It would just waste trees right now- I promise I'll produce the final version in all it's well formatted and pretty splendor when it's ready.

I present it here because as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, there will be the odd typo, poorly written sentence and perhaps incorrect fact (hope not but I know what Murphy's law is like)

PLEASE give feedback- feel free to post here and point out things wrong or right, or you can PM or email me if you prefer.  I'd much rather find out things wrong now than after I've printed it, bound it into a book and put my stamps into it!

Two file types available (identical contents, just have both for compatibility reasons)

Deafening silence- either I've stunned you all to silence or no one else cares Wink

But I think I've finished this now- it's the ready to print version.

NOTE- PREVIOUS LINKS NOW NO LONGER WORK

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15607508/Yearbook2.docx  -word doc version
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15607508/Yearbook2.pdf  -pdf version.

These are currently only available as a 4 page signature version.  This means, if you print it out, you'll find the pages are in a funny order.  This is deliberate!  By taking the pages and folding them in half, every four pages makes a section (it's called a signature in book binding terms).  These can then be sewn together and turned into a book (the same way they've been made since we switched from scrolls).   Soon as I get time (next couple of days), I'll be printing out my copy and putting it together.  I intend to make a tutorial on how to do this so if anyone is interested, stay tuned.

Lovely! Does this follow on from a Year 1 yearbook? If so, is it possible to get a copy of that one? It would be nice to print out the whole series so far.

Yes it does (and will eventually be followed by the year 3,4 and 5 books).  It is my way of safely storing and cataloging my stamps forever.  This is why I do have images of a few stamps- they're the ones that I will never get my hands on but couldn't leave out.

After a small technical hitch (aka, Word is EVIL Ouch) I've updated both files, docx and pdf.  If you hadn't printed it yet and were intending to, please download the latest version first.  The page order was mucked up and there were a few minor issues also happening.  I hate computers sometimes...

Tutorial still coming (first part is up but it is mainly concerned with generating content with just a bit in the end about printing and folding pages).

Probably the last time I'll go on about the yearbook (well this volume anyway) but I just wanted to say that the first part of the tutorial on how to make a book is up on my blog (how to sew pages together) and the second part should be along next week.  The method is suitable for any book so if you wanted to make your own stamp albums you might also be interested :D

I'll now return you to your regularly scheduled Cinderellas...

Right now?  I'm on my mid-semester break :D Horay for being a lazy uni student.   The down side of course is the unemployment resulting in no money but oh well!

Kel that is great work and reminds me of the early days of the Discworld stamps.

I must do something with all the loose stamps I have here, see what gaps I might have.  You have inspired me for the first time in years to get my collection out again Thumbs Up  Thank you!

It's been fun going back in time doing the research.  The first two years were my favorites in terms of stamps.   It's going to be sad to do 2007 onwards because my collection started to develop holes as the budget failed *sigh*

Still, there are a few good stamps to come in 2007- the Bonk werewolves and my favourite Hogswatch stamps to date.

The tutorials are done and here are the results.  I'm rather chuffed with it myself.

All I have to do now is put my stamps in (drat, where are my stamp mounts :S)
There are a few more photos on the blog if you want to see more or read about how they were made.

A very very useful tutorial that can be put to so many other uses, not just a stamp album. I have wanted to create my own album pages doing something different from other people, and making my albums both unique and individual. But have not considered the bindings before, probably going to rely on bought loose leaf binders (but see later). Now you have made me rethink this option, though where I will find the time is one of life's mysteries. Currently my pages are on hard disk (backed up in three other digital sources of course) or printed out and stored in a box file. The stamps themselves are lurking in stockbooks. I still have to revise a large number of pages!
My only critisism is that once bound the album has to be complete - utterly complete. Using your Discworld collection for example, we have recently been alerted that the Year Two Hogswatch stamp has appeared in two distinct shades, presumably from a reprint, and likewise the Leshp stamp. Creating an album in a logical or chronological order new findings must be accomodated, but only as an appendix. You can only create the album in retrospect. Hence a loose leaf binder does have some advantages.
Nevertheless a job well done Kel, and many thanks. I am most likely to adopt your method and cross my fingers

Good point about being complete- to some extent by waiting five years before producing the album it helps.  Most facts are out of the woodwork by now. If anything the risk is the other way- information being lost to time.  Without resources like Steeljam's stamp catalogue and Doc Brown's spreadsheet I don't think it would be possible to create it at all.

It also depends on your level of complete.  I decided very early on not to fuss about color variations personally since it added an extra layer of complexity that I did not need (I was also running Mad Fan's Guide at that point so really needed to draw the line somewhere).  As you said, one can always make an appendix, I even have a few blank pages at the end of mine if I wanted to add anything of vital, crucial importance in later, or if the change was large enough there is nothing to stop me producing a new and updated second edition.  Given the stamp within are contained in stamp mounts it would only take a bit of time to transfer them over to a second edition.

And in the end I find it is better to have this, even if it isn't perfect, than have my stamps living in a box in a way they can't be enjoyed.  Now I can just pick up a volume and look through it to remember all the stamps and the memories associated with them.  Besides, I love the feel of books over folders- my original plan was to use scrapbooks for the same reasons you list for loose leaf folders, but the feel of plastic pages was never the same for me.

Two years to go now -after consideration of the state of my collection, I plan on a 2007 and 2008 edition before drawing the line.  Any curious or little known facts or information about any 2007 stamps would be welcome.  I hope not to take another two years to make the next volume but also don't want to make promises I can't keep!

Don't give the impression that this concept should be limited to a Discworld collection. Its an excellent way to create an individual set of albums for any collection of flat 2D items - not just stamps, butcards, matchbox labels etc as well.

You summed up the appeal with

Oh sure, a book is a book and can be used for anything you care to collect up to but not excluding your belly button lint collection.  However, since I only collect(ed) Discworld stamps my focus is on that.

I really enjoy the process of making the books but producing the content is a rather laborious task and should only be done by a devotee.  I'd offer a book binding service to all collectors- you design it, I make it, but I suspect that few could afford what it would cost in terms of time and materials.
