Colin. You are suspiciously quiet and that is never a good sign.
Is there going to be a Valentine issue this year or are we all going to have to trail down to the shops to buy some second-rate tat?

Hi Keith
Yes I am quiet but for all the right reasons.
You are the fourth person to ask this question in the last 24 hours!

Borrowing a perforator tomorrow so keep an eye on eBay (and here) over the weekend...

DEFINITELY on ebay TODAY! between 14.00 and 14.15 today.
I've had a couple of requests for direct sales to save both of us eBay fees but I find it really helps me, when there are lots of orders, to have a structure I can check everything against; what has sold, how many are left, who has paid what and when, and who I have posted to. So I'd rather stick to eBay if that's OK.
If a buyer isn't registered with eBay or Paypal then contact me and hopefully we can sort something else out.
Once I get an opportunity today I will put a picture of the 2012 range on here, in the appropriate place!
Thanks for your patience.

It's Susanne I feel sorry for. She's now only got a week to get her order in; Colin to pack and post it; have it delivered in the USA; write it and post it back to me in the UK so I can be delighted to receive an unexpected valentine on 14 Feb.
In past years it always seems to get lost in the post - I put it down to failures in the postal system.

I always find it really touching that any of the cards or stamps are ever actually given as gifts to partners, because it must be a true mark of affection that they don't mind when said item is then quietly squirrelled away into the buyer's stamp collection...
But if anyone really needs their stamps delivered in time to be able to send them out to a third party PLEASE let me know and I will make sure they get sent first.
Thanks for the positive response

Ditto in spades. Is the Early Bird bonus the imperf colour-trial sheet? If so it's my favourite item.
If only I could see the variant. I don't think I have any. You'll have to send more Colin - this time with the difference marked in pen!!
I wonder what the bird at the back (the male I decided 'cos that's where male birds go) is saying. I think she's looking rather grumpy and he's rather taken aback so how about "What do you mean "No"?"
or
"But I didn't know you were expecting a Laernu card".

My package arrived safely this morning. Lovely stamps showing again how well Colin and Alan seem to complement each other. Great bonus items (I won't give anything away until others have received/reported their deliveries). Nice back story as well. No problem spotting the sport this year. |

Keith wrote:

I wasn't sure about the "buyers whose order totals £35.00 or more" extra item (I know I'm being greedy here but you can't have too much of Isle of Vue!) but was that the card with the back story extract from Mathilde-Rose Domineau Franq's Flora and Fauna of Laernu?

Best to post here Joolz as the other thread will come down after 30 days-ish.
I'm pleased these have started to turn up, I was beginning to worry. The colour tests were bonus items to spenders of over £35; the backstory item only goes to the 'Early Bird' buyers.
I would class the on-sheet variant as 'easy' though I have played a bit of a trick on the sheet layout to cunningly camouflage it. Sorry Keith.
All orders to date are now in the post.
Bruce, Ol' Fella - the chap behind the Post Office counter started to cancel the stamps on the outside of the envelope so you have a bit of a bonus there that no-one else has...
Phew!
Glad you like them Now tell all your friends!

the little devils each tied to an envelope by a big plump Norwich CDS.
One of the stamps is stuck on upside down (or maybe there are three
inverted and it is the envelope which is upside down). I must get such a

Thank you Colin and Alan, my stamps arrived this morning. Great envelope and cancelled at Thorpe Road too.
But I have so many items to look at. I can see which item is the Forum Bonus item, but I seem to have other extra items and can't decide which is the extra bonus? Or is there also a bonus item for also being signed up to your Facebook page?
I love the stamp, but can't make my mind up whether the extra variant you have given us on the minisheet would have made a better variant on the sheet? An embarrassment of riches
Now to read the back story (or stories) all over again...

The extra bonus, for people who bought several items, is an imperforate colour test sheet. There is no bonus for Facebook friends.
The copies of reference material were dropped in as free extras just to give a bit of background information. Not everyone has them, I didn't think about it until some of the packing had already been done - it helped pad out the envelopes. There are 7 in all so chances are you won't all have exactly the same - and some are also older than others. Just thought you'd like to see them - when they are gone, they are gone!

Can anyone tell me where I could find books about Laernu? Even without the scribbles they would be interesting to read.
And would anyone want to swap scans of their notes so I can build up a complete set? Or should we ask Colin to make a whole set available, squashed spiders and all.
I have the poem sheet and the 'Bill Lole' flora book pages if anyone would like copies.

I'd start at the main library on Laernu.

Mine have arrived and as one expects, its an exercise in what makes a great stamp, and with all the extras, a great issue. Many thanks Alan and Colin
I need to go through all the items I got with the intention of having these up on AskMe eventually. But if anybody wants to declare any variations beyond the bee sheet variant go ahead ad post them up here. I will collate it all.
And love the scan of the story. Colin don't listen to Keith, he wouldn't recognise a spider if it flew up and bit him. Having had this taster I think more of us will want the background info about Laernu.

Here's some choice items in my order (apologies for the in-yer-face colours, but scanner a bit enthusiastic today)
Firstly on the envelope was this tete-beche pairing, a pink colour variety and a mirror image stamp in the standard colour.

And inside was this colour trial sheet and a strip of three plus a label in a minisheet

Did everyone get the same? Or different variations?
And just for completeness there was these two postal stickers on the back

Teacher's pet! I didn't get an askme sticker and it's my website! Get me someone from the Lawyers' Guild (I meant the apostrophe of course).
My proof sheet is different to yours - raising the spectre of everyone having a different range of colours.
My three plus label is the same as yours.
My envelope has a normal purple stamp in a tete beche pair with a deep bright green. Both neatly tied with a Norwich CDS.

There was at least 8 combinations last year.

My envelope bore a joined pair, (not tete a beche), but one is a colour variant. My colour test sheet was of somewhat more muted pastel tones, and had a tete a beche pairing of the bottom two stamps on the left. I believe that everything else is unlikely to be different from everyone else's, (though you never know!)

Sorry, my envelope is just a joined pair. Not tete beche. Dunno why I said that. Wishful thinking perhaps.

My colour test sheet says, in the bottom margin, FOR APPROVAL 1.2
Does this mean sheet 1 of 2, sheet 12, or a sheet made up of sequence 1 and sequence 2. I favour the latter, though it could mean quite a range of combinations making different sheets

My colour test sheet has the words "Colour Tests" in black and "For Approval 1.1" Below that in red.
I neglected to mention that the rust coloured colour variant I received on the outer envelope was a Bee variant!

Here is a scan of the joined pair on my envelope from Colin.
I don't think, apart from the colours, that there is anything unusual about either of the stamps but perhaps other more eagle-eyed collectors will spot something I have missed.
My imperf sheet of colour tests is as per Steve's, same colour variants and also numbered 1.2. So we have evidence of two different sheets, 1.1 and 1.2. Anyone around who has version 1.3 or higher? I guess we will have to pin Colin against a wall at Stampex and get him to show us the full set - and relieve him of any spares at the sharp end of cutlass. Arrrr! Or the spongy end of a slice of cake if that might work better.
As to Colin's photocopies of his "research clippings", I received:
Page 56 of an unidentified journal, with handwritten copyright to "Pictorial Publications", with an article entitled "The lost 'Fier-children' of the Isle of Vue". The page has several other handwritten notes: "FIERLOBEN CLOVER. * Alan", "#7. CE->AB", "->WILLIAM LOLE - ref.", "£7.50 FEE Paid." and a circled number 7, the second and the last of these presumably indicating that this is the seventh of Colin's seven items as he mentions in his earlier post. Interestingly, there is mirror text visible, apparently showing through from the reverse side of the photocopied page, which includes a picture of last year's valentine stamp in what would be the top left corner of that page (top right of the mirrored image). Unfortunately, I can't make out any of the text itself.
Page 64 of an unidentified book, with handwritten credit to "William Lole" and "Credit (BM) Botanical Gardens", headed "XXV. PAPILIONACEAE I. Dicotyledons" and showing four drawings of trefoil and quatrefoil clovers, specifically "254. Trefoilium Scabrous Ll. Clover Roughenen.", "255. Trefoilien Seriousen La. Clover Lustrenotten: Zzz.", "256. Treifoliate Cuddlen Aah. Socialisen Clover: A-Z." and "257. Fierfoiliat Fortunane Ooh. Elusiver Clover: F.". The book from which this page purportedly comes may be "Isle of Vue Flowers, Shrubs and Grasses" by "William 'Bob' Lole", a text mentioned on the other page as per my previous paragraph which shows a sketch of the fier-loben clover as taken from this book. On the other hand, this page is also marked as "Alan - they don't have a pic of Fierloben - this is only 4 leaf version they have.", which suggests it may be a different book. This page also has several other handwritten notes: "CE", an indecipherable (to me at least) word at top middle (looks something like "Harborne."??) and a circled number 1, the latter presumably indicating that this is the first of Colin's seven items as he mentions in his earlier post.
So, what are items 2 to 6 of Colin's research papers?

Bill Lole is not only a botanist, but also a champion wicketkeeper according to the second Sportens issue; assuming that it is the same Bill/William.

The photocopy I have of the article entitled "The lost 'Fier-children' of the Isle of Vue" has an image of the Fier-loben attributed to a book by William 'Bob' Lole. Bob would be an unusual contraction of William to be sure but it did make me think that it might be alluding to "Billy Bob" as a forename/nickname (as in Billy Bob Thornton) and so I wondered whether it was indeed deliberate and a different William Lole from our famous cricketer. Or I might of course be overthinking it and it is just a typo.

A little bird has told me that the Sporten sportsmen are disguised real world people but we I think we are unlikely to know who they are; more obscure than so-called celebs on a Sky3 reality show!
So the trend may have continued to the names in these Laernu periodicals.

I have a 1.4
There is a horizontal se tenant pale blue pair at the bottom. Or, looked at another way, a vertical pale green/pale blue pair at the bottom left.

There is a similar effect on sheet 2, but just text. Sheet 3 seems to have a large page sized image showing through from the other side but I cant quite make it out. I will scan these, mirror them (so the mirrored text is corrected) and se if I 'up' the contrast a bit to make what is there more understandable.
And if anybody wants a copy happy to oblige. These could be posted up in the Forum too, so everyone can read them, as tehy do give depth to what has been a carefully considered and 'researched' project.

Those who have seen any of the background to the story of the Children in the Wood, on which the stamp design draws, will have recalled Hansel and Gretel, and perhaps Babes in the Wood. The tales of Laernu seem to have parallels to our world, but more coincidentally Babes in the Wood is said not only to originate in Norfolk, but is based on a true story. The wicked uncle cast the children out to die in Wayland Woods. By contrast Hansel and Gretel was more of a morality story with its roots in the famines of medieval Europe.
The Laernu story differs in that the children run away rather than being abandoned. But like all good oral tradition, it seems there may be versions with either a happy or tragic ending. When we see all the research items perhaps we will get a fuler picture of the insopiration for the stamps

Hello everybody. Just popped in to say a huge thank you to Colin and Alan for the beautiful stamps that I received today. There is so much to look at! THANK YOU.
I've been trying to read the last few posts here but the forum is moving pretty quickly. I'll catch up later.
I received colour test sheet marked 1.4. I also received a sheet of clover drawings from a page with a heading XXV. Papilioaceae and page 311 from a book about magical events on the Isle of Vue.
I noticed a couple of images have been posted here. I've tried to put an image up of the colour test sheet but I can't get it small enough.
Colin - the French trip isn't permanent, yet. Hopefully, later in the year.
Anyway, thanks once again.
Regards Pat

Here are some scans of three of the research papers, #2, #3 and #7. There is a link to a pdf file of each for a full size repro which can be saved. Because of their size they will load slower than a web page.

Intriguingly, the scan of your item #7 has completely different handwritten notes than mine.
I'll try to scan and upload my item #7 and also my item #1 tomorrow.

I like the reference to Sombrero Laernu; the Festival of Hats. But I am also intrigued by the reference to the Institute of Designers, Engravers and Artists. Collectors will know that this was responsible for the Penny Blank stamp issue. So is it based in our world or Laernu? I assumed our world because it was a Penny stamp, not a Fillis or Doris. Now I'm not so sure.

Have Forum members noticed that the bottom stamp of the three on their Bonus mini-sheet is the Caterpillar variant?
I'd also be interested to know if we all got the same colour variant inside the card. Mine was the pink stamp, franked. I suspect each card may have had a stamp from a range of colours.

On the outside of my envelove one stamp is pink, the other a brownish bee variant (see below). The one in the card is pink- like the one on the envelope, lighter than the ones on the sheet.
