With apologies for the delay I have now added the latest issue of Steve's Postal oddities of Wales to askmeaboutstamps.com
It covers the always popular issues of the Bo Peep Sheep Sanctuary.
You can find the details http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/?page_id=1112 - here .
Well done Steve. I liked the booklet - your first. You must be a proud father!

The next issue will be coming your way soon. Something a bit different yet again and certainly something few have ever seen.

I find it difficult to pick-up threads from the last forum and perhaps it's better to give a brief re-introduction.
Steve Tandy, Steve on this forum, produces his own stamps on the general theme of Welsh Philatelic Oddities. These have been catalogued on his and Keith's website (along with the stamps of Colin Edwards and now Hilary) as per Keith's post above. They are produced with great imagination and humour. Steve has unearthed a whole new history of Wales and has produced local stamps, revenues, definitive and commemorative stamps such as the Oernent Tramway, The Welsh Antarctic Territories and, most recently, The Bo-Beep Lost Sheep Sanctuary. There is usually a special cover but in this latter case, a special booklet.
Included in the Bo-Peep stamps, or labels as they are termed in this instance, are designs of a somewhat risque nature and I have had to place these in a brown paper bag only to be brought out when the ladies have retired from the dinner table leaving the gentlemen to their cigars!
Information sheets accompany each issue. I wonder if any of the variant National Sheep Dog Week booklets were actually distributed last time or was Steve just teasing us?
Brilliant stuff!

I have to add my praise to the other comments on Steve’s stamps. I have the last issue and a few of the earlier ones. Hopefully, I will get the others soon. The attention to detail on the stamps and information sheets is fantastic. The story behind each stamp is well researched, plausible and very funny. Keep up the good work Steve.

I must add my voice to this thread... they're bloody brilliant... I can't wait for the damn volcano to stop belching ash into the air so that air mail starts to function again and I can finally receive the last four issues. I'm really looking forward to them.

Another entertaining issue Steve but I can't stop to describe it as I have the overwhelming urge to go eat a Welsh Rarebit.

A bit of both. There may have been a variant booklet or two going out, but everyone only got one booklet. I couldn't get a complete set of booklet variants, just a couple of the commoner variants.

I am contemplating my own album or presentation for these. Impetus was others' comments and Wilfred's excellent DW pages. I would like to tackle this in a novel way, but I'm sure that someone somewhere somewhen has already covered every form this may take. I'm open to suggestions. There may be some more background information forthcoming too for anyone doing their own presentation/album.

At Stampex I saw the spoof Gibbons page you produced for someone else's stamps and I thought at the time it would make a great format for presenting stamp album pages. It was certainly good enough to fool some of the other collectors who were trying to see what we were all discussing.
You also have the very excellent 'askmeaboutstamps' online pages to use as a basis for an album presntation, and certainly that would make a good place to hang any extra background information for your stamps.
Personally, and completely selfishly, I would much rather you spent all of your free time creating more new Welsh Oddities than presenting the existing ones...

I received a few more items from Steve last week and once again, was blown away by the quality and imagination of his work.
I am a member of a model making forum. A regular comment there when presented with top quality work by another member is ‘Time to give up’ indicating that while the work is inspirational and enjoyable, top quality work like Steve’s makes the rest of us realise our own shortcomings. Of course, I am just speaking for myself here and am not saying that anyone else is not up to standard.
Another point of course is Steve’s generosity with the amount of stamps and covers included with each posting.

I believe that this issue's Dai Abyylu is a faulty font on the Welsh Breakfast stamp - the 1 of 1ST has been replace by a I...
It was obviously such a tricky one to spot that all the other collectors are completely flummuxed - do I get a special prize Mr Tandy please?

Note for Bill
Diabolo = Beamer = Sport = Mythprint - a deliberate design variant slipped into the sheet to amuse and kerfuffle the collector.

The key word is deliberate. So never an error, which so many people get wrong.
And you may well have prequalified for the special prize Mr Edwards.

Some of the collectors we met at the London show were telling me about 'sports' on our DW sheets that I never actually produced - which I would call errors, usually the consequence of the printing process. It is amazing what can randomly happen when the 'dithering' process on a digital press has to make a choice between placing a coloured dot on an image or not.
We asked if anyone had spotted the tortoise on the Djelibeybi 1 Talon. When we designed and produced the original artwork it was intended to be printed litho with much greater detail than the digital printing. We know the tortoise is there because we put it there. We even did it separately on an overlay so that it could - possibly - later move if the stamps were reprinted (which of course they were not) and yet it is only obvious on some of the stamps. The digital dithering process either blocks it in or increases the highlights, either way for the most part it becomes blended into the surrounding rocks.
Anyway! I logged on here to say oooooh! a special prize?! I can't wait :-)

You do mean the camels, palms and pyramid 1t Djelibeybi don't you? Strained my eyes searching for a tortoise on my copies to no avail. When you say 'some of the stamps' did you mean some stamps on all sheets or all stamps on some sheets. In context I take it to mean the former. Any clues as to which stamps on the sheet or which bit to squint at most carefully?
and haven't we gone off topic here? This should be in another section and discussed further.

well here goes
Firstly I aim to get the next lot out within a week, but don't hold me to that by camping under your letter boxes.
For the following issue it may be possible to offer full sheets in addition to the usual style of sets. Obviously these would cost more, but I hope to keep costs down, though due to organisational reasons I would like to sell only in complete sets of sheets. There would be 4 in the first set of sheets. This way I hope to improve the Oddities series of stamps.
Not every Welsh Oddity would be available in sheets, but some previous sets might possibly reappear in this format if there was sufficient interest in a particular set.
Noting some comments in the forum regarding buying sight unseen, I would be prepared to post up images in advance, but would keep the background history to the stamps hidden until they were released, maintaining some mystery about them. Forum members would get the first option to buy and any surplus may then be offered on eBay.
If you are interested let me know without any obligation on your part, either here, by pm or by email. If you could let me know how much you would be prepared to pay and/or how often that would be a great help.
so over to you lot .....

Hi Steve
I will definitely be interested! Please put me down for a set.
I think you will get more interest from everyone else if you can be more specific about the costs, asking how much people will be prepared to pay puts the emphasis back on the buyer not the seller.
Putting a cost on something that takes so long to prepare, produce and distribute, yet is tiny and looks so simple, is always going to be difficult.
I would also be interested in buying the previous issues if you were to re-release them in a higher quality format.

Sorry folks but another hold up until I get a successful response from the Kodak printer support team. It keeps telling me that I do not have a printhead installed or that it is installed incorrectly. It is wrong on both counts. This is after one new print head already and a complete replacement printer.
If anyone wants my opinion of Kodak printers they are welcome to it, but it boils down to a sentences involving phrases like "unfit for purpose" and "suitable for recycling but nothing else"

Hi Steve,
I am certainlyinterested in any sheets, goes without saying. Just sign me up, or tell me how to subscrive, when and how much. I love your oddities series and I hope you will continue with them.
As to your printer: might I suggest the Epson? I have been using Epson printers for the past ten years, never had a problem. If you want to I will make some proof prints for you, so you can see for yourself.
Cheers,

I was in deepest Welsh Wales only last week and can confirm that there was no printer. As Steve suggests it must be the turn of the English with it.
Anyway, it's no good complaining to me. Once electricity has reached there I am sure that the printer will follow.

Ah Bala! A place my wife and I used to stop on our trips to and from Aberystwth. Little did we suspect the romance of the stamps. What fools we were.
Steve's write up clearly suggests that none of us has a complete set of stamps. So I thought I should start a list with what I have. Feel free to add to it.
3 of my stamps are duplicated. I wonder if that means I have a cunning diablo. Or does it mean Steve is getting old and can't count.............
2.5d - Magazines (early "small" printing) 2.5d - Magazines ("large" printing) 3d - Letter Post 3.5d - Magazines Parcel Post (early "small" printing) 3.5d - Magazines Parcel Post "large" printing) 4d - Chickens Parcel Post (two of) 4.5d - Apples Parcel Post 5d - Pork Parcel Post 5d Green - Parcel Post 5d Purple - Parcel Post 6d - Broomstick Parcel Post 8d - Slates Parcel Post

I hope to be able to offer the next issue of the Postal Oddities of Wales in sheet format in addition to the normal set. These A5 sized sheets will only be available in sets of 4 at £4 per sheet plus postage.
Here's a preview of two of the stamps.
The stamps are special issues from the welsh colony in Patagonia commemorating events during the war against the rebel forces in the early 1960s. These are well described in Malcolm Pryce's excellent Aberystwyth books. The stamp depicting Clip the Welsh sheepdog is a singleton, but the Bombing Raid stamp is from a set of 3.
The set will cost £16 for the four sheets plus postage of £1.25 UK and £1.75 abroad. An A4 sheet wih the background to the stamps will accompany the issue. Current subscribers to the Oddities will also receive the usual single stamps etc, and an extra stamp not available in the sheets.
Could those interested please let me know, without any obligation to buy, by pm or email. If there is sufficient interest I may be able to lower the price a tad.

Steve - what a start to my day! Fantastic stuff yet again and made all the more effective by Jovan's printing and perforating.
Absolutely wonderful stamps and background story. I haven't yet dared open the brown envelope. I now find myself in the same position as so many DW collectors - not wanting to spoil something by having to open it to check the contents!
And speaking of Discworld - someone should definitely give your stamps a mention on the forum there. With the recognition you have received for contributions to the Journal and for winning competitions for your philatelic suggestions, I think it is only time that your own stamps got a mention! If you don't feel you should do it yourself then perhaps someone else should.
I hope your latest stamp issue spurs you on to even greater things, and will also inspire other members here to try their own hand at putting their ideas onto gummed paper.
I must now read those Malcolm Pryce 'Aberystwyth' books - and I hope you have sent him a copy of your stamps. You must publish his response here if you get one.
Congratulations again

I can only concur with what Colin has written. I'm lucky enough to own all the Malcolm Pryce books so have the added advantage of understanding the background. All of you who have not read them should do. They are spoof private eye stories set in an Aberystwyth which is recognisable if one knows it and yet is in a world somewhat different to ours - for instance the Patagonian wars that this issue deals with.
This issue stands out as your best yet Steve. The sheets are a BIG step forward and the quality of printing and perforating is all it should be.
The background sheet is great. The description of Clip's ultimate sacrifice brought a tear to my eye. I must go to Aberystwth museum and pay my respects again next time I am passing.
I get the impression you really enjoyed doing this issue. I look forward to all the follow-ups that the books will allow you.
But I am filled with guilt. I really must get round to adding your last issue to the askme.... website.

Colin, there's one extra in the brown envelope that you'll never see unless you open it. Your comment makes me wonder if you ever opened the letter in the Berwyn Roswell Incident issue. This is interactive philately
I have emailed MP and awaiting his response, but fear he gets plenty of emails, possibly a significant number from people who are learly bonkers.

And all the girls in their Welsh costumes stood nearby with their trays of wilted flowers for sale don't make it any easier. Some of them have flowers they say have been flown all the way from Patagonia in old Lancaster bombers and they are really expensive of course - and very wilted.

Thanks toast.
Looks like you had a good air show there. I go to one near me, http://www.cosfordairshow.co.uk/ , but not every year. This tends to be a good mix of old and new.
Watching a formation of choppers doing an ariel ballett is great, and they usually have a Lancaster bomber, as featured on the stamps, inevitably recreating a bombing.

That's not something I've ever witnessed... now battle formations in Vietnam... we'll that's a whole 'nother story.
I meant to ask you Steve, there's a ghostly apparition in your 8d Bomber Crew issue that did not present itself to me until I browsed the upsized scan at the library last visit.. and it's unidentified in your presentation. Is there something you can share about it? Very cool!

toast | You have to suscribe to get Steve's background leaflets about his stamps but in his words from this issue "Who is the mysterious woman pictured with the crew? Was she an acquaintance of one of the crew or a secret agent? Some theorists, after research of old school photos, say that the names on the 8D stamp are in the wrong order. And others suggest that the bombing raid picture, taken from a sketch my a local man and drawn at the time, is suggesting that the raid was not all it seemed. To get closer to the truth, with testimony from those involved, read the Aberystwyth books and make your own minds up".
My son is in Aberystwyth this weekend. I should have asked him to do some research whilst paying his respects to Clip at the museum.
