Rockefeller Center - Observation Roofs

A recent purchase. We've seen these before, well most of them, the 4th stamp is different. Described as a full set, they were relatively expensive. Of course, they are not a full set which are fairly common. The stamps have no gum, the red one has a stain on the reverse, the next two have minor surface damage. I would assign no value to those three stamps. However, the fourth stamp is taller than the others, is not dated, has a different border design and the legend at the bottom reads OBSERVATION ROOFS/ HEIGHT 853 FEET. Much more rare than the others. I have seen two other similar designs relating to shops at the Rockefeller Center, both, in my estimation, also rare. A good find.

Charles Dickens: A Tribute to Genius

This was a beautiful British Poster stamp issued in 1912 to for his birth centenary. Issued by the Charles Dickens Centenary Testimonial Committee to raise funds for his descendants. Printed in sheets of 12 by Raphael Tuck and Sons, London and described as a book plate.

Not so well known was the American 2 cent version, shown here. Much more rare, it has taken me several years to find this one.

American Presidents 1940 Photo-Stamps

A complete set from George Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt with accompanying paperwork. Photo-Stamps are miniature glossy photographs on card stock. This makes them difficult to perforate. Most of these stamps depict actual photographs apart from the early presidents and a couple of later ones. From Apeda Studio Inc. In New York.

Don't Blame Industry For High Prices.

Tax cutting campaign stamps from the 1940s (?) Judging from the straight edges, there could be another 10 stamps in the set.

Two lots of Cinderellas for Oklahoma. I purchased the first lot of 8 from the USA then found the last 2 in the UK. Despite their similarity, they are actually different sets/part sets.

Oklahoma City was settled on April 22nd 1889, when the area known as the "Unassigned Lands" was opened for settlement in an event known as "The Land Run". Some 10,000 homesteaders settled the area that would become the capital of Oklahoma. The first lot of 8 stamps, from 1939, marks the 50th anniversary of this event. The stamps are rouletted.

The next 2 stamps, which are perforated, but in the same style as the others, mark 'Oklahoma Country's Golden Anniversary, 1889-1939'. Later Oklahoma Country (or Territory) would merge with the Indian Territory to form the State of Oklahoma in 1907 and the Indian Territory would cease to exist. These 2 stamps honour actor, performer, writer and philatelist Will Rogers who was born in the Indian Territory.

Here is a picture postcard of the ramshackle post office:
